If you're reading this while checking your water rationing schedule... first of all, we see you.
Puerto Rico is facing one of the most significant droughts we've experienced in years. Many families are adjusting to scheduled water outages, filling buckets, timing showers, and learning how to make every drop count.
Let's be honest...
Nobody's idea of self-care starts with checking whether today is a "water day."
When life becomes stressful, skincare is often one of the first routines we put aside. We tell ourselves we'll get back to it when life returns to normal.
But here's something we've learned after more than 60 years of caring for skin:
Healthy skin isn't about having unlimited resources; it's about making smart choices.
Just because you're conserving water doesn't mean you have to stop caring for your skin. With a few simple adjustments, you can continue protecting your skin while also protecting one of Puerto Rico's most precious resources.
Because taking care of your skin is also a way of taking care of yourself.

1. You Don't Need a Sink Full of Water to Wash Your Face
Many people imagine cleansing means standing over a running faucet.
It doesn't.
Instead:
• Dampen your skin with wet paper towels. Do not apply your cleanser to dry skin.
• Make a lather with a little bit of water, enough so you have plenty of bubbles. Apply to moistened skin and massage gently using your fingertips.
• Remove it with a wet soft microfiber cloth, a reusable facial towel or paper towel dampened with water.
You do not have to do these steps with running the sink’s water faucet. You can use just a little bowl or just wet the skin with bottled water. You'll be surprised how effective this method is and how much water it saves. You can totally cleanse your face with 1/2 a water bottle!
No need to recreate Niagara Falls in your bathroom.
2. Toner becomes your best friend
Right after removing the cleanser with your wet towel apply toner with cotton. It is a really important tool to finish the cleansing process, removing any excess and refreshing your skin balancing it.
3. Clean Smart; Not Less
One of the biggest myths during water shortages is that you should simply wash your face less often.
Please don't.
Here in Puerto Rico, our skin is constantly exposed to humidity, sweat, sunscreen, excess oil, Sahara dust, air pollution, and everything else our tropical climate throws at us. Skipping your morning or evening cleanse can leave that buildup sitting on your skin, increasing the likelihood of congestion, irritation, and breakouts; especially if you're already acne-prone.
Instead of cleansing less, cleanse more efficiently.
Turn off the faucet while you're massaging in your cleanser. Use only enough water to dampen your cloth for removal.
A small adjustment can save a surprising amount of water over time without compromising your skin's health.

4. The Right Cleanser Makes All the Difference
Not every cleanser is created equal.
A harsh cleanser can strip away your skin's natural protective barrier, making it feel tight, dry, or irritated especially if your routine has changed because of water conservation.
Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type means you can cleanse effectively without over-washing or needing multiple attempts to remove excess oil or makeup.
That's one reason we believe skincare should never be one-size-fits-all.
5. Leave-On Products Become Your Hardest Workers
When water is limited, your leave-on products become the MVPs of your skincare routine.
Hydrating serums.
Barrier-repair creams.
Antioxidants.
Moisturizers.
And of course...
Daily sunscreen.
These products continue working long after you've applied them, helping protect your skin throughout the day without requiring another drop of water.
That's a pretty good return on investment.
6. Moisturizer Is More Important Than Ever
Many people assume that using less water means their skin won't become dehydrated.
Unfortunately, skin doesn't work that way.
Air conditioning, sun exposure, drought conditions, environmental pollutants, and Sahara dust can all compromise your skin barrier.
A well-formulated moisturizer helps lock in hydration and keeps your skin functioning the way it was designed to.
The key is finding one that's right for your skin.
Oily skin still needs moisture.
Dry skin needs even more support.
Sensitive skin benefits from ingredients that calm and strengthen the barrier.
One moisturizer doesn't fit everyone and that's perfectly okay.
7. Choose What Works With the Water You Have
When water is limited, even the way you remove your cleanser can make a difference.
Soft microfiber cloths are gentle, effective, and reusable, making them a great option when you have enough water to rinse and clean them properly. But during stricter water rationing, that may not always be practical.
In those situations, a soft disposable paper towel can be a simple alternative. Wet it with just enough to comfortably remove your cleanser, then discard it when you're done, no additional water needed for washing or rinsing a cloth.
The goal isn't perfection. It's finding practical ways to keep caring for your skin while making every drop count.

8. Hands Off!
Stress changes habits.
Without realizing it, many of us start touching our faces more often when we're worried or overwhelmed.
Unfortunately, our hands collect oil, dirt, and bacteria throughout the day.
Keeping your hands away from your face is one of the easiest ways to help prevent unnecessary breakouts and it doesn't require any water at all.
Now that's conservation.
9. Don't Forget the Most Important Part of Your Routine
This article isn't really just about skincare.
It's about self-care.
Water shortages are stressful. They interrupt routines, create uncertainty, and make everyday tasks feel more complicated than they should. When everything around you feels unpredictable, those small daily rituals become surprisingly important.
Applying your moisturizer.
Putting on sunscreen.
Taking two quiet minutes for yourself in the morning.
These moments remind us that even during difficult seasons, we're still worthy of care. Sometimes healthy skin starts with simply slowing down.
Your Skin Changes. Your Skincare Should Too.
One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is believing that the same routine should work forever.
But your skin changes with the seasons.
It changes with stress.
It changes with age.
It changes with the environment around you.
A drought is no different.
That's why we've always believed in customized skincare instead of one-size-fits-all routines. Sometimes all your skin needs is a small adjustment not an entirely new routine.
If you're wondering how to adapt your skincare while conserving water, we'd love to help.
Together, we can create a routine that's effective, practical, and designed specifically for your skin's current needs.
Because even when circumstances change...
Healthy skin is still within reach.
